Memory has a part in my paintings. I often wait years to return to a place I saw in particular conditions. Memory smoothes the inevitable changes which happen in the time it takes to create a painting. The light changes continually, while you work, and with the seasons. The sun lowers in the sky at the fall equinox, en route to the cool winter solstice. Clouds scurry, reform and recolor. Shadows lengthen. The Northern sky is closer to the earth than nearer the equator. These thoughts play in the background of one’s mind, while recording present moments outdoors, in plein air.

I am interested in the experience of seeing, beyond the limitation of the words for the things represented and the edges between them. Words create boundaries, as do lines. Lines only rarely exist outside of our imaginations and drawings. I use painting as a vehicle with which to record perception: of light, dark, and the subtle color shifts between them as light falls across form and distance.

When the viewer is drawn to look somewhere specific within the painting, the rest is seen peripherally, with less acuity and, as with magic tricks, a sleight of hand can be performed in those spaces, altering color or perspective.
